This marvellous theatre only has 99 seats shared between its boxes and stalls. It was finished in 1808, under the Napoleonic occupation, and was initiated by nine local families. In the second half of the 19th century it was decorated by Cesare Agretti and in 1892 by his son Luigi, only 14 at the time, who painted the ceiling and the vaults, the boxes and the meeting room. After its construction, Monte Castello became a capital of a large territory and enjoyed a particularly vibrant period thanks to the ideals of brotherhood and equality introduced by the new French administration.
The original building has been restored several times. The latest works, after a period of neglect during the 50’s and 60’s, were finished at the beginning of the 90’s. The interior of the theatre, considered “the smallest in the world”, is made entirely out of wood in the “Goldoniano” style and represents a rare example of its kind, offering a harmonious and well thought out use of space for scenery, for the actors and the audience.
Plenty of shows take the place each year: prose, opera, classical and jazz concerts. The theatre is also available for meetings and civil weddings, and can be visited on Saturday and Sunday at the followings times: from September to March from 10.00 am to 12:30 pm and from 3.30 pm to 6.30pm; from April to August from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm.
The theatre is also open between 25th December and 6th January, in July and August.
On other days you can arrange a visit by calling the cultural association “Società del Teatro della Concordia”, Piazza del Teatro, 4. Cell. 328 9188892 – mail:

The traveller who follows the E45 highway from Perugia to Terni, or vice-versa, half away along the road, comes across a landscape that bit by bit becomes more and more lovely: the hills begin to soften, pastel coloured scrubs come out, the mountains, the Martano on one side and Peglia on the other, define a horizon that doesn’t go above 1000m. We are in the heart of Umbria. Here the Tiber snakes thorough the valleys, while the hill tops are dotted with medieval villages that once stood guard over the surrounding countryside. The traveller who arrives in this part of Umbria, drawn by its more famous towns, encounters a peaceful landscape tinted by every shade of green that mother nature has to offer: from the diligently cultivated fields to the dark woods that surround the hills. In 1960/61 the American anthropologist Sydel Silverman in her book Three Bells of Civilisation (Columbia University Press, USA) called Monte Castello di Vibio a “Lost Paradise” for living according to the rhythm of nature. More recently the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore described Monte Castello di Vibio as the most important place to visit out of 138 listed in its “medieval itinerary”. The village, which takes its name from the Roman “gens Vibia”, is a typical medieval “castrum” become part of Todi’s territory in the 13th century and a “signoria” in 1392. Nevertheless Todi was obliged to crush the spirit of independence by announcing a ban on all commercial activity, Monte Castello remained part of the territory of Todi until the 18th century.
The Napoleonic era brought a period of new life and splendour to the town when it became the administrative centre of a vast territory reaching from the Tiber to Orvieto. Inspired by a current of new ideas, the community embarked on a series of innovative projects, the most lasting of which was the Teatro della Concordia (Concord Theatre), built between 1807 and 1808. After the second Papal Restoration in 1814, Monte Castello became a Comune. |
